Yes, fundamentally it is, if it is a necessary correction. Only odometer manipulation for fraudulent purposes is prohibited in Germany and elsewhere.
If the speedometer needs to be calibrated so that it displays the correct speed and the proper mileage, then the speedometer calibration is legal. A speedometer repair is also legal. Only fraudulent odometer tampering is punishable by law. You can find more details in our FAQ on speedometer calibration. In the next section, you will find examples of when speedometer calibration in Germany is legal and necessary.
Speedometer calibration is always required when changes have been made to the speedometer or the vehicle that affect the measurement of the odometer and the speedometer display. For example, the speedometer must be readjusted if new tires with a different diameter are fitted to the vehicle.
Distance measurement is calculated based on tire rotations. With a larger tire diameter, a longer distance is covered at the same number of rotations. The odometer therefore counts fewer kilometers than actually traveled. If the tire diameter decreases, the distance covered at constant rotations is often significantly lower. In this case, the speedometer shows more kilometers than actually driven. A speedometer calibration must be performed in both cases.
If a speedometer is defective and cannot be repaired, a replacement speedometer must be installed. In this case, the new speedometer must be adjusted to the actual mileage. This may require rolling back the odometer or correcting the mileage upwards.
So when should a speedometer calibration be done? Fundamentally, any adjustment to the odometer is permitted and necessary if it results in the correct mileage being displayed, the speed being measured correctly, and the odometer counting the driven kilometers accurately. You don't have to drive to the Netherlands for a professional calibration; you can easily schedule an appointment on-site or at our workshop in Frankfurt.
If speedometer calibration is not performed by trained professionals, it can lead to issues and eventually become very expensive for you as a customer. For example, it is not uncommon for an amateur with inadequate tools or outdated software to modify the setting only on the instrument cluster, failing to adjust the mileage in all relevant control units. A contradictory mileage display is always suspicious and, in the worst case, can be interpreted as fraud if you wish to sell your vehicle in the future.
We have also frequently seen unprofessional operators leave scratches on the speedometer housing or dashboard during installation and removal, which looks inherently suspicious – even if there was no ill intent.
To avoid such experiences, turn to a professional expert you can trust, who leaves no traces and causes no headaches. We possess the corresponding special tools and the right diagnostic devices with the latest software to ensure you have a worry-free experience.
Furthermore, our experts have years of professional experience, training, and specialist knowledge. Our customers are so convinced of the quality of our work and the reliability of our service that they also return for chip tuning to get more performance from their vehicles. We are very proud of this.
Buying a used car is a matter of trust. Nevertheless, according to a study by the ADAC, the odometer is tampered with in about one in three used vehicles that change owners in Germany. Unfortunately, even many reputable used car dealers and dealerships sell vehicles with artificially lowered mileage. In most cases, this odometer tampering can be detected. With our state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, we can easily check whether the mileage of your used car corresponds to the actual kilometers driven. So play it safe when buying a car by having an odometer check performed. This is the only way to be certain that you have not been cheated.
When buying a car, you should also ask to see all repair and maintenance invoices and carefully study the entries in the service booklet to identify any discrepancies. You can also contact previous owners listed in the registration document to find out the mileage at the time of sale. The more past odometer readings you can verify, the higher the probability that you will uncover any existing tampering.
Speedometer calibration is performed using diagnostic tools whose software can reprogram the speedometer and the odometer. Since speedometers are usually anchored within the vehicle's instrument cluster, it is removed for this purpose. For a trained expert, this is done in just a few steps. The data on the microchip is then adjusted, bringing the odometer to the correct reading.
In common German usage, "Tacho" refers to the combination of the speedometer (speed indicator) and the odometer (distance counter). When people speak of "rolling back the speedo," they usually mean adjusting the odometer/distance recorder.
For this purpose, the microchip located on the circuit board is reprogrammed. This may require desoldering individual components from the board and precisely resoldering them in fine-mechanic work. Once this detail work is completed, the instrument cluster is reinstalled into the vehicle's dashboard. The speedometer now shows the correct reading.
Detailed definition of terms and price transparency.
Speedometer calibration refers to the adjustment of the speedometer and the odometer to the actual parameters of the vehicle so that the speedometer displays the correct speed.
In Germany, it is legally required that the speedometer never shows a lower speed than the actual speed driven. The maximum permissible upward tolerance is 10% + 4 km/h. For example, at an actual speed of 70 km/h, the speedometer may display up to 81 km/h. Showing a lower speed than actual is strictly forbidden.
The speedometer is typically coupled with the odometer. The neutral legal term for the odometer in German traffic law is "Wegstreckenzähler" (distance recorder). According to §57 (3) StVZO, the distance displayed on the odometer must not deviate by more than ± 4% from the actual distance traveled.
These tolerance thresholds are relatively broad because factors like tire wear and tire pressure have a significant impact on tire diameter, and thus on the measured distance and speed.
Odometer adjustment refers to setting the vehicle's odometer to the actual kilometers driven. If the speedometer was calibrated incorrectly during a previous adjustment, the odometer will record distance incorrectly. The displayed mileage will deviate significantly from the actual distance driven. In this case, the odometer can be corrected to the true mileage.
The price of speedometer calibration or odometer adjustment depends on the amount of work required to correct the settings. If you provide us with your exact vehicle model via phone or our contact form, we will give you a binding price quote.
If the effort turns out to be higher than anticipated, we assume that risk, and you only pay the agreed-upon price. If the actual effort is significantly lower, we may charge you less than the initial quote. Simply call us to clarify any questions or to schedule an appointment.
Speedometer calibration (also known as odometer calibration or mileage correction) is the professional adjustment of a vehicle's odometer to reflect the correct mileage. This service is legitimately required in many situations: after replacing a defective instrument cluster, after installing a used cluster, after vehicle electronics repairs, or when converting mileage units from miles to kilometres for imported vehicles.
At Tacho Frankfurt, we perform speedometer calibration exclusively for repair, calibration and data restoration purposes – fully in compliance with German law. The Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) ruled in its decision (AZ: 2 BvR 1589/05) that adjustments to an odometer for repair purposes are not a criminal offence under §22b StVG.
Our nationwide postal service makes it easy: regardless of where you are in Germany, you can safely send us your instrument cluster and receive it back after professional calibration. For customers in Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main area, we naturally recommend visiting our workshop at Schultheißenweg 105A, Frankfurt Rödelheim.
