What is Speedometer Calibration?
Professional Speedometer Calibration – Legal & Complete
Speedometer calibration is the professional adjustment of the odometer to the correct mileage reading – at all locations where the vehicle stores this value. Modern vehicles store the odometer reading in multiple control units simultaneously.
This service is necessary, for example, after replacing a defective instrument cluster, after vehicle repairs involving an ECU swap, when importing a foreign vehicle (miles → kilometers), or after data loss due to vehicle damage.
We only perform legal speedometer calibrations for repair and calibration purposes – in accordance with §22b StVG and the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court (AZ: 2 BvR 1589/05).

Modern vehicles store the mileage reading redundantly throughout the electronic system. The instrument cluster, engine control unit (ECU), transmission control unit (TCU), electronic ignition switch (EZS), central gateway, and vehicle key constantly communicate over the CAN-bus. Professional speedometer calibration is required in many legitimate situations. After replacing a defective instrument cluster, the new instrument does not show the correct mileage. After repair work on the vehicle electronics, the stored mileages may be inconsistent. For imported vehicles from countries with mile measurements, conversion to kilometers is required.
In all these cases, speedometer calibration is a necessary and legal measure that serves to restore correct vehicle data. The Federal Constitutional Court decided in its ruling of May 9, 2006 (AZ: 2 BvR 1589/05) that odometer adjustments for repair and calibration purposes are not punishable.
