Everything You Need to Know About Speedometer Calibration

On this page, the team from Tacho Frankfurt answers the most frequently asked questions about speedometer calibration, odometer adjustment, and speedometer repair.

What is Speedometer Calibration?

Speedometer calibration (also called odometer adjustment, speedometer service, or speedo calibration) refers to the professional adjustment of the odometer in a vehicle to a specific correct mileage. It is necessary when:

  • A defective instrument cluster is replaced with a used one.
  • A new instrument unit is installed after repair.
  • The vehicle is imported from abroad (e.g., miles → kilometers).
  • Mileage data has been lost due to an electronic defect or vehicle damage.
  • All vehicle systems need to be synchronized after restoration work.

Is Speedometer Calibration Legal?

Yes — under the right conditions, speedometer calibration is completely legal.

The German Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) clarified in its decision of May 9, 2006 (AZ: 2 BvR 1589/05):

“Altering the odometer reading is not punishable per se, but only if it is done with intent to deceive and to the detriment of third parties.”

Section 22b of the StVG only penalizes manipulative changes for the purpose of fraud. Adjustments and calibration for repair, maintenance, and calibration purposes are explicitly permitted.

→ Detailed information on this can be found on our Legal Information on Speedometer Calibration page.
