Everything You Need to Know about Speedometer Calibration for Audi

Speedometer calibration on Audi vehicles requires specialized expertise and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. Modern Audi models use fully digital instrument clusters (Audi virtual cockpit), which are closely networked with numerous control units via the CAN-Bus and FlexRay systems. An incorrect or incomplete speedometer calibration – where only the mileage in the display is adjusted – leads to significant data inconsistencies.

At Tacho Frankfurt, we ensure that during the calibration of your Audi, all relevant control units are consistently set to the correct mileage. This includes the instrument cluster as well as the engine control unit (ECU), the central gateway, and the electronic immobilizer.

Common reasons for an Audi speedometer calibration:

  • Instrument Cluster Replacement: The installed used part displays the mileage of the donor vehicle.
  • Electronics Repair: After replacing damaged control units.
  • Import Vehicles: Adjusting miles to kilometers on imports.
  • Data Recovery: After power failures, voltage spikes, or software errors.

Important Note for Audi Owners

From the model generation with the UDS diagnostic protocol and newer encryption technologies, calibration via simple OBD plugs is no longer possible. Our workshop has high-precision programming devices with which we can also edit and calibrate EEPROMs directly on the circuit board. This guarantees a clean, error-free calibration without traces in the fault memory.

Calibrate Mileage on Audi Models After Cluster Replacement

The need for an Audi speedometer calibration very often arises from repair measures. Instrument clusters of Audi (e.g. FIS displays or the virtual cockpit) tend to develop pixel errors or complete failures with increasing vehicle age. When a used replacement cluster is installed, the vehicle does not automatically adopt the original mileage of the car. To ensure a complete and honest vehicle history, the replacement speedometer must be precisely adjusted to the actual total mileage of the Audi.

At Tacho Frankfurt, this process is carried out using state-of-the-art diagnostic software. We calibrate the mileage not only superficially in the speedometer EEPROM, but also synchronize it in the engine control unit (e.g. Bosch EDC16 / EDC17, Continental Simos) and in the central gateway. Only this careful work at all memory locations ensures that no error messages are stored in the on-board diagnostics.
